Rakhi Sawant, who turned TV host with serial Rakhi ki Insaaf on NDTV Imagine, has withdrawn her plea seeking to quash an FIR against her for allegedly abetting suicide of a participant of the show. Laxman Singh Aharwar, one of the participants, had allegedly committed suicide after being humiliated by Sawant on air.
Sawant and four other media persons, three from Jhansi and one from Lucknow, had moved the court seeking to quash the FIR against them. Their lawyer Satish Maneshinde told the division bench of Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice A P Bhangale, "We apprehend arrest at the hands of the Jhansi police. According to our information, a team from Jhansi has already left for making the arrests. Thus we seek protection from the court or an interim relief that no coercive action should be taken against these five until this petition is pending before the court."
However, the bench said, "We are not inclined to offer any relief on the petition. Take necessary legal recourse, you may file for anticipatory bail application." Maneshinde also argued that as per the medical records, Laxman died due to natural causes therefore no case of abetment should be made out against Rakhi and others. He added that there is so much hype because she is a famous personality. The bench then observed that because she is a public figure, no relief should be given to her. "A famous personality or not, it does not make any difference to the court," the bench said.
Sawant has been charged under Sections 120-B (punishment of criminal conspiracy), 306 (abetment of suicide) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace). But later on Thursday Manshinde withdrew the petition claiming he would move the appropriate court for taking necessary recourse under law. Accordingly Justice Khanwilkar allowed him to withdraw the application.
